Meet The Board
Terry McDermott - President
Terry, a former first‑round draft pick, spent eight seasons as a player in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization before injuries ended his career. He then moved into television, covering local and national sports for KGGM and KOAT, and became well‑known in New Mexico for segments like I Challenge Terry, Golf Tips, and NFL Zoo Picks. His work earned him eight New Mexico “Sportscaster of the Year” awards.
After leaving television, Terry joined Intel Corporation as a media relations and government affairs director. During more than a decade with Intel, he also served as president of the Rio Rancho Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Rio Rancho Economic Development Corporation Board, and chairman of Leadership New Mexico.
Terry later spent over sixteen years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, most recently in Rural Economic Development, helping support housing, infrastructure, and business growth across New Mexico and the nation.
In 2024, he was inducted into the Rio Rancho Public Schools Hall of Honor for his leadership and relationship‑building. Much of his impact was shared with his late wife, Betty Anne, whose support and partnership shaped their long‑standing commitment to improving education for local children. Married for 52 years, Terry and Betty Anne are blessed with four children and seven grandchildren, with two more on the way.
Chris Salas - Vice President
Christopher Salas currently serves as the Interim President of the Rio Rancho Educational Foundation. A dedicated educational leader and advocate for public education, Christopher is the Activities Director at Rio Rancho High School, where he works to create meaningful opportunities that support student success, leadership development, and community engagement.
With experience in education, nonprofit leadership, and community service, Christopher is committed to strengthening partnerships between schools, businesses, and community organizations to enhance educational opportunities for students throughout Rio Rancho. As Interim President, he is focused on advancing the Foundation’s mission of supporting innovative programs, recognizing excellence in education, and investing in the future of Rio Rancho Public Schools.
Shannon Roybal - Secretary
Greetings! My name is Shannon Roybal and for 14 years, I proudly served Rio Rancho Public Schools as both a classroom teacher and school librarian, where I was passionate about supporting student learning and helping foster a love of reading. I remain actively involved by volunteering at Eagle Ridge Middle School as a Student Council advisor, mentoring students and supporting school leadership initiatives.
My connection to RRPS extends beyond my professional career. Both of my children attended Rio Rancho Public Schools from kindergarten through graduation and are proud graduates of Rio Rancho High School. Having experienced the district as an educator, volunteer, and parent, I have a deep appreciation for the impact RRPS has on students, families, and the community.
I am honored to serve on the Rio Rancho Education Foundation Board and look forward to supporting opportunities that enrich education, empower educators, and help students succeed throughout our district.
Patricia Di Vasto - Historian
Patricia is a founding member of the Rio Rancho Public Schools. She has been an educator for 48 years.
After being a Math teacher and Math teacher for 20 years, she assumed various leadership assignments at schools across the district including assistant principal at Lincoln Middle School, Rio Rancho High School (twice), and Stapleton Elementary School. She became principal at Stapleton in 2012 before going on to being the principal at Sandia Vista Elementary School in 2016. Patricia has worked as a substitute administrator and hearing officer for the district.
She was asked to join the Rio Rancho Education Foundation in 2013, after writing a proposal requesting Science manipulative kits for all of the elementary schools. It was an honor to work side by side with Betty McDermott, from the Center for Hands on Learning, seeing this endeavor to fruition.
Patricia understands the importance of financially supporting all of the Rio Rancho schools so students can have a rich education.
Some of the biggest accomplishments which she is very proud of was being the chairperson for the K-12 Math curriculum in 1998, a recipient of the Albuquerque Business First 2020 Woman of the Year and 2020 Lifechanger of the Year. It is an honor and privilege to serve on the board.
Kathy Shallenberger
Kathy Shallenberger is the Activities Director at V. Sue Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho Public Schools, where she is entering her third year in the role. She brings more than 21 years of experience in education and is passionate about creating meaningful opportunities for students to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
Before beginning her career in education, Kathy worked for Wells Fargo Bank for 13 years while earning her college degree. She began her teaching career in Clovis, New Mexico, where her husband, her high school sweetheart, was a coach for the Clovis Wildcats. In 2008, her husband accepted the position of Head Baseball Coach at V. Sue Cleveland High School, and the family relocated to Rio Rancho. Kathy taught at Vista Grande Elementary School before transitioning to V. Sue Cleveland High School as Activities Director.
Throughout her career, Kathy has remained committed to serving students, supporting school programs, and building strong relationships within the community. She believes in leaving a lasting legacy through service, leadership, and dedication to the students and families of Rio Rancho.
Kathy and her husband are proud parents of their 25-year-old son, Treston Shallenberger. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, watching baseball, and spending time with her family.
Antonio Ogaz-Muñoz
Antonio Ogaz-Muñoz is a Rio Rancho High School alumnus with a longstanding connection to the community. He holds a PhD in Business Administration from Florida Atlantic University, along with an MBA and BBA from the University of New Mexico. His professional experience spans public sector management, technology, financial operations, strategic planning, and nonprofit governance.
Antonio joined the Rio Rancho Education Foundation Board with a desire to give back to the community that played an important role in his education. He brings a practical perspective shaped by work across government, business, and nonprofit organizations. Through his Board service, he hopes to contribute his experience while supporting initiatives that provide meaningful resources and opportunities for Rio Rancho students and educators.
